Belugas and manatees outside their usual habitat
Just like the Tilopu, belugas can be seen outside their usual range—in the Seine in 2022, and near Germany in 2026.
Belugas are adapted to the cold; they can also live in more southerly waters.
Similarly, some manatees can adapt to less warm waters.
Mammals and changing environments
Mammals have remarkable abilities to adapt to different environments, especially colder ones. The two lineages of mammoths and elephants are characteristic examples of adaptation to very cold and very hot environments respectively.
Even within our own species, Homo sapiens in South America shows how wide that range can be: the peoples of Patagonia, the Arawaks, and others are typical cases of the same species—close to us—thriving in climates and landscapes that could hardly be more different.
